Job Description


St Bees School Dongguan (SBDG), situated to the north of Shenzhen, Guangdong, in southern China, is the newest school in the Full Circle Education Group family, and opens its doors to students in September 2020. 

SBDG caters for students of all nationalities, but it is realistic to assume that most students will be Chinese.  In September 2020 SBDG will open its doors to students in Years 11 and 12 (Grades 10 & 11).  The following year will see classes in years 11-13 (Grades 10-12).  The basis for the curriculum will therefore be the Cambridge A-Level programme, enriched with character development components, the Global Awareness Programme a varied co-curricular programme and other notable examples of best practice.  There will be an EAL-rich Pre-A programme in Y11 (G10) with a compact iGCSE offering and there may be an outside possibility to offer a 2-year iGCSE programme as from age 14 if the education bureau permits this. 

The Director of Operations is line-managed by the Principal, reporting to her/him for strategic planning, personnel and operational matters and will work closely with the Chinese Principal and the School Board on all financial matters.

He/she will support the School Board and acts as Clerk to the Board for the purpose of governance and compliance with all regulatory and statutory requirements. Working with the Principal as a member of the School Leadership Team, he/she is responsible for ensuring that the highest quality is maintained in all school support functions, contributing to the smooth and efficient running of the school.

The Director of Operations is responsible for:

  • managing all support functions of the school;
  • overseeing the management of the maintenance of the school estate, catering and domestic services, and ICT systems to support the work of the school;
  • ensuring that the school meets its legal and statutory obligations including corporate governance, compliance, licensing, data protection and health and safety;
  • acting as Clerk to the Board.;
  • managing the commercial activities of the school.

Infrastructure and Maintenance

The Director of Operations has overall responsibility for the maintenance and development of the physical resources, buildings and grounds of the school, overseeing and monitoring:

  • the safety and security of the school campus;
  • the maintenance of all buildings and equipment;
  • the upkeep of all playing fields, playing surfaces and the grounds;
  • of general fire safety and the installation and maintenance of suitable equipment for protection and escape from fire;
  • the safe and effective operation and maintenance of the school’s vehicular fleet..

Refurbishment Programme Management

Working with the school’s lead team the Director of Operations will develop the business case required to support infrastructure refurbishment programmes and any new build projects in support of school expansion.

He/she will, on approval of this business case, deliver the programme of work to scope, schedule and cost.

Commercial and Support Services

The Director of Operations will manage the school’s commercial make/buy policy and where appropriate develop and deliver contracts for:

  • the delivery of high quality catering for pupils, staff and guests on a day to day basis as well as special events;
  • the provision of a good standard of housekeeping services in all parts of the school;
  • the provision of a transport service to the school;
  • the supply and provision of school uniform.

Health and Safety

The Director of Operations is responsible for ensuring the compliance with all requirements of Health and Safety regulations through formulation of suitable procedures, and the monitoring and implementation of the school’s policy.

Person Specification

The successful candidate should have some or all of the following qualifications, experience and characteristics:

  • Academic/professional qualifications applicable to this senior leadership post
  • Experience of the management and development of buildings and facilities
  • Well-developed and proven English language and interpersonal skills
  • Experience of leading and developing staff; tact, diplomacy and impartial judgement
  • Integrity, discretion, reliability and commitment
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and respond to unplanned situations
  • Good ICT literacy and presentational skills
  • Attention to detail and commitment to quality
  • Sensitivity to the aims of independent education and the ethos of the school
  • A commitment to promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children.
  • A relevant further degree in business administration would be an advantage.
