Job Description

1 HEAD OF BOARDING & PASTORAL CARE

Boarding & Pastoral Care is central to MIS, and in Seniors all students, boys and girls, are

boarders. The Head of Boarding & Pastoral Care is therefore a pivotal role in the school. He or

she is the leader of the MIS team who are the primary agents of the school acting in loco

parentis and will be responsible for establishing effective common policy and procedures to

ensure the care and safety of all boarding students across the school. The primary duties of

the Head of Boarding & Pastoral Care therefore involves the leadership and coordination of

the pastoral, social, emotional and boarding care of all students at the school. The Head of

Boarding & Pastoral Care will have full direct responsibility for the school’s Boarding Houses,

and will also play a subsidiary role in the teaching and extracurricular programme of the

school. There is a particular responsibility for leading the professional development of all MIS

Boarding Staff and the staff responsible for the pastoral provision.

2 PLACE IN THE ORGANISATION

The Head of Boarding & Pastoral Care reports to the Head of School, and will lead the

Director of Enrichment, a team of Boarding House Leaders and their staff. The Head of

Boarding & Pastoral Care will model best practice in boarding house and pastoral care,

enabling the Boarding team to develop their own knowledge and practice of good pastoral

and boarding care. The Head of Boarding & Pastoral Care will assist their team to represent

the needs of their students when these are being discussed in any kind of academic or

pastoral case conference and will maintain particularly close contact with the other Academic

Leadership Team members, the school nurse and school Counsellors, with whom they will

meet on a regular basis.

RESPONSIBILITIES

3.1 SCHOOL PHILOSOPHY AND STRATEGIC PLANNING

The Head of Boarding & Pastoral Care will have a responsibility to

  • Ensure that the school mission and objectives are implemented consistently in

areas for which he or she holds responsibility

  • Participate in the development of school philosophy and MIS Values
  • Assist in the development of the school’s strategic plans, with particular reference to

Boarding and Pastoral Care

3.2 ADMISSIONS

The Head of Boarding & Pastoral Care will work closely with the Director of Admissions in

order to 

  • Assign students to their Boarding House
  • Ensure that all appropriate medical and academic records are received and maintained
  • Ensure that the process of joining and leaving MIS is managed appropriately and is

as seamless as possible. The Director will also ensure that Boarding staff coordinate

responses to requests for references in line with school policy when a student is about to

leave the school.

3.3 STUDENT HEALTH AND WELL-BEING

The Head of Boarding & Pastoral Care works with House Boarding staff, Head of Wellbeing

and a team of Tutors to develop systems that will

  • Promote the physical health and well-being of the students in their care
  • Ensure coordination with the school nurse to ensure that all boarding students are

registered with appropriate health care providers

  • Ensure that all teaching staff are aware of students with specific health needs, assisting the

school nurse to maintain records of allergies, special health conditions and any needs for

special assistance

  • Enable all Boarding Staff to know and follow the Health and Safety procedures of the school,

especially as they pertain to boarding house care, coordinating the rehearsal and practice of

a range of evacuations and safety procedures

3.4 PASTORAL CARE AND BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT

The Head of Boarding & Pastoral Care will establish systems that ensure that staff will

  • Take responsibility for the social and emotional welfare of the boys or girls in their care
  • Know these students and their needs well
  • Provide a point of reference and support for students assigned to their Boarding House
  • Identify and support students whose progress, development or well-being is affected by

changes or difficulties in their personal circumstances

  • Know how and when to refer students to colleagues for specialist support
  • Play a leading role in the coordination of support for the students in the school
  • Actively apply all school arrangements for Child Protection
  • Manage student behaviour constructively, in line with the school’s behaviour policy, using a

range of techniques and strategies to promote independence, while developing students’

social, emotional and behavioural skills

  • Establish and oversee systems and procedures for tracking student’s social, emotional and

behavioural progress.

3.5 RECREATION, TRAVEL, EXPEDITIONS, SOCIAL AND SPORTING PROGRAMMES

The Head of Boarding & Pastoral Care will establish systems that will ensure that Boarding  

House staff

  • Supervise, approve and coordinate all travel and exeat arrangements for students in their

care, ensuring that all arrangements comply with school policy

  • Scrutinise, and as appropriate, approve any arrangements for trips, outings and expeditions,

ensuring that all arrangements are compliant with relevant school policies

  • Ensure a full programme of evening and weekend activities for students in their care, both

on and off site

  • Ensure that there is full participation by house staff and students in all forms of Clan sports

and competition

  • Enable the students in their care to enjoy an appropriate level of private time in which they

are free to choose their own activities, which they can enjoy securely and safely

3.6 HOME – SCHOOL COMMUNICATION

The Head of Boarding & Pastoral Care will establish and oversee systems with the Boarding

team that ensure that Boarding House staff will be able to

  • Maintain and coordinate communication between the school and the parents and

guardians of their boarding students

  • Communicate the logistics of all travel arrangements for students in their care
  • Ensure that the students in their care maintain an appropriate level of communication with

their parents or guardians

  • Communicate pastoral issues to parents and guardians
  • Play a leading role in coordinating meetings for parents of students in their house to discuss

their academic progress and emotional well-being.

3.7 MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

As the leader of the Boarding Team, the Head of Boarding & Pastoral Care will

  • Take direct responsibility for overseeing the school’s Boarding Houses
  • Chair meetings of the Pastoral Leadership Team
  • Line manage Houseparents, Director of Enrichment and the Designated Safeguarding Lead

3.8 CURRICULUM AND PEDAGOGY

The Head of Boarding & Pastoral Care will ensure that Boarding House staff and Tutors will

establish systems that provide appropriate supervision in each house at the designated times

which enables students to complete assignments by working quietly and independently.

3.9 LEADERSHIP OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT.

The Head of Boarding & Pastoral Care will have a particular responsibility for training all

members of staff who are assigned boarding or pastoral responsibilities, conducting a fullprogramme of in-house training and identifying opportunities for external training that will

be suitable for staff who wish to develop their knowledge in the area. This will be particularly

important for staff who have had little previous experience of boarding responsibilities.

3.10 PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS AND COLLEGIALITY

The Head of Boarding & Pastoral Care will be committed to appropriate personal professional

development while Reflecting on the effectiveness of his or her own teaching, pastoral care

and boarding house practice

  • Having a creative and constructively critical approach towards innovation
  • Reflecting upon advice and feedback from colleagues and supervisors
  • Working as a team member
  • Participating in rotas, duties and meetings as required
  • Supporting school functions and events outside of normal school hours

3.11 RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

The Head of Boarding & Pastoral Care will establish systems that ensure that Boarding

House staff will be able to

  • Monitor the allocation of resources and spending in areas for which they are responsible
  • Participate in a consultative process of school budget construction

3.12 OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

The Head of Boarding & Pastoral Care will also undertake any other reasonable tasks as

required by the Head of School to ensure the effective pastoral care, safety and academic

development of the school.
